Abstract(s)
The main objective of this literature review is to analyze the benefits of using myofunctional orthopedics in orthodontic, respiratory and postural rehabilitation in the treatment of dental molocclusions. Malocclusion is an irregularity in the development of teeth and/or dental arches that occurs in both primary and permanent dentition. In the field of health in general, myofunctional activators have gained special attention as therapeutic interventions due to the promising results in the dental, respiratory and postural context caused by malocclusion. Myofunctional therapy is a set of intervention techniques for myofunctional disorders that affect the dynamic behavior of the stomatognathic system, its balance and functioning. It can be carried out in isolation or in conjunction with other therapies, through the use of removable elastodontic devices that come in various shapes, with different materials and orthodontic purposes. According to the literature, the use of myofunctional activators goes beyond the therapeutic field and the correction of orthodontic imbalances, but also aims to optimize respiratory function and positively influence posture, demonstrating that this triad is closely interconnected. Some reviews suggest preventive and interceptive treatment as a means of reducing the extent of malocclusion development and addressing psychosocial factors.
