Abstract(s)
aprofundando conhecimentos e habilidades.
A Enfermagem
This report was produced as part of the Master's Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing, with a specialisation in Nursing for People in Perioperative Situations, at the Escola Superior de Saúde de Santa Maria. Its aim is to reflect the journey made in acquiring the competences inherent to the degree of Specialist Nurse and Master, reflecting a global appreciation of the experiences lived during periods of clinical teaching, developing and deepening knowledge and skills. Considering the risk of infection and surgical procedures, the report highlights the acquisition of competences involving the person/family who experience a surgical/anaesthetic process that enable care to be provided, considering the specific health needs of the person and family, in a safe and individualised way, as well as considering the high risk associated with perioperative care arising from the vulnerability of the person, procedures and complexity of the environment, thus contributing to improving the quality of care provided. Perioperative nursing is an area focussed on patient safety, particularly with regard to infection prevention and control. Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the most common and costly of the wide range of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Although rates have been falling significantly over the last decade (44.2 per cent), patient safety is still compromised, particularly with regard to infection prevention and control. To provide a safe patient experience, perioperative nurses apply evidence-based best practices for the prevention of SSI. (Bashaw & Keister, 2019). The methodology used was based on a descriptive, reflective and analytical method supported by authors who draw on scientific evidence. As a result, perioperative nurse specialists need to mobilise and act to ensure the safety of patients, professionals and the environment.
