Abstract(s)
O envelhecimento demográfico é um fenómeno da contemporaneidade, fruto da evo-
lução social e da ciência, fruto de tudo o que o conhecimento nos foi permitindo conceber e
construir. Este fenómeno é multidimensional, tendencialmente durável, irreversível e com
efeitos, não só em Portugal, mas em todas as sociedades. Este envelhecimento permite aos
avós viverem esta sua condição durante mais tempo e também de uma forma diferente. Os
avós de hoje não são como os avós dos nossos pais. A relação entre avós e netos é uma rela-
ção diferente de todas as outras relações familiares. É uma relação marcada por vidas muitos
experientes e outras a construir-se, por um amor despreocupado em fazer cumprir regras e
onde há muito a ganhar com esta intergeracionalidade, uma relação que permite um colo afe-
tuoso para os netos, cujos pais mantêm ainda muitas preocupações que os avós já não têm, e
um viver despreocupado de uma avosidade que não se confunde com a parentalidade.
Viver mais tempo não é necessariamente viver melhor e procuramos através de entre-
vistas perceber como é que a tarefa de cuidar dos netos influencia ou não a forma como se
envelhece.
As entrevistas sugerem que a tarefa de cuidar dos netos principalmente quando o fa-
zem com regularidade e por opção, contribui para a qualidade de vida na terceira idade e para um envelhecimento bem-sucedido.
The demographic aging is a contemporary phenomenon, which is the result of a social and scientific evolution that knowledge has already allowed us to conceive and build. This multidimensional phenomenon tends to be durable and irreversible and its effects exist not only in Portugal, but also in all societies. It allows grandparents to live this condition for a longer time and also in different ways. Current grandparents cannot be compared to our par- ents' grandparents. The relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is completely different from all other family relationships. It is a relationship full of many experienced lives and others to be built: a carefree love with no rules and where there is much to gain from this intergenerationality. It also allows an affectionate lap for grandchildren, whose parents still have many concerns that grandparents no longer have and a carefree living of an age that is not to be confused with parenting. Living longer does not necessarily mean living better. The interviews help us to understand how the task of taking care of grandchildren in- fluences or not the way someone gets older. They also suggest that the task of taking care of grandchildren, particularly when they do it regularly and by choice, contributes to the quality of life in a future old age and at the same time for a successful aging.
