Abstract(s)
Vitamin D deficiency is a public health issue that affects the population all over the world, estimated to affect around one billion people of all ages. In humans, vitamin D can be obtained in three ways, by exposing the skin to UVB radiation, by food and medication. Vitamin D undergoes two hydroxylation's until it reaches its active form. It is in the liver that vitamin D, whether ingested or produced in our skin, is first metabolized into 25-hydroxyvitamin, the main circulating form, and then in the kidney vitamin D is metabolized again until it becomes its active form, 1,25- dihydroxy vitamin D. The total serum concentration of 25(OH)D is used to define the status of vitamin D, as it is considered the most reliable indicator of its storage in the human body.
