Abstract(s)
This research aims to contribute to the theoretical discussion on the processes of autonomization and transition in foster care institutions and their impact on the lives of young people who have been previously fostered. It also intends to contribute to the identification of practices that reverse the vulnerable paths of these young people's exit processes. This work was based on a qualitative methodology, supported by semi-structured interviews with five young former foster individuals whose fostering journey took place between 1997 and 2016 in a foster home in the municipality of Coimbra. The information was collected between January and April 2023 and involved young former foster people aged between 26 and 33 years old. The results obtained from the content analysis of the interviews carried out indicate that, although the young people interviewed believe that the foster care measure represented a protective factor in their lives, it is consensual that the system is not yet fully structured to respond to the difficulties inherent in the process of young people leaving the foster care system, highlighting the disengagement and lack of responsibility of the care institutions from the moment they leave. This dissertation ends with a discussion of the results in the light of existing literature and implications for practice, gradually holding young people responsible through activities that enhance their autonomy.
