Abstract(s)
As we live in a society which is mainly communicative, where information is transmitted in a very natural and vertigious way, the reception phase is rarely met as real knowledge, mainly due to all of the human factors involved. Nowadays, the media often represent the only available source of immediate information. As a consequence, the media are known to reveal the reality and therefore, they play a major influence on people’s minds and opinions. When we confront ourselves with certain issues or institutions of the social system, it becomes even more important to study and follow the media discourse. This culture of the immediate news often puts police operations, mainly the ones of public order maintenance under a fierce social and political scrutiny. So, it’s essential to characterize and analyse the media discourse nowadays, especially how they portray police activity. Through a qualitative approach, studies have been made about the news on police activity on political demonstrations in newspapers, such as “Correio da Manhã”, “Diário de Notícias” and “Jornal de Notícias” in 2019. The results obtained in comparison with previous investigations, comparing if there were similarities or major diferences between them, with the change in the political and social sphere, show us that the main discourse of the media is predominantly descriptive. In other words, there is an attempt to portray the events “as they were”, not making any moral judgements.
