Cultivating Experiences, Harvesting Learning – Play in Nature and the Formation of Environmental Citizenship in Early Childhood Education This final report presents a qualitative study carried out through the implementation of a pedagogical awareness intervention project, within the scope of the Educational Practice component of the Master’s Degree in Preschool Education and Primary Education. The guiding question — “Does play in/with nature have an impact on the development and learning process of preschool children?” — focuses on understanding how this approach influences children’s development and their learning processes. Throughout the study, an intervention project was implemented in which children engaged in natural environments and play-based activities that fostered direct contact with nature. Careful observations were conducted, and relevant data were collected in order to analyze the impact of play in natural environments on children’s holistic development. In this context, the group developed skills in observation, exploration, motor coordination, and creativity. Furthermore, interaction with nature stimulated socio-emotional skills and enhanced children’s well-being. Play in/with nature proved to be highly relevant in fostering environmental awareness, promoting care for the environment, and encouraging playful exploration among children aged 3 to 5 years.
