Abstract(s)
as metodologias e práticas do design, antevendo a
Portugal.
This dissertation aims to identify and map (between the years 1951-1974) the design artefacts produced by Conceição Silva’s atelier regarding modern furniture design. Its main goal is to clarify how such creations contributed to solidifying the affirmation process of Design as a formal discipline and profession in Portugal. Francisco da Conceição Silva was one of the most relevant Portuguese architects of the second half of the 20th century. In addition to having pertained to a generation of architects that truly promoted modern architecture, he integrated and developed design methodologies and practices within his project activities, thereby foreseeing the importance of said discipline, even prior to it being institutionalized in portuguese territory. By historically contextualizing (bearing in mind the political and economic panorama which characterized the portuguese society post-World War II) fundamental aspects of the architect's personal life (such as his educational period and elective complicities) and, above all, his professional experience (renovation projects for the Lisbon stores, main exhibitions, as well as touristic and urbanistic projects), this research study aims to devise a comprehensive record of the modern furniture designs that were assigned (branded) by Conceição Silva (as well as those of his collaborators that worked in his atelier), in order to clarify how these creations contributed to affirmation process of Design, as an institutionalized discipline and practice, in Portugal.
