Tradicionalmente, o objetivo do tratamento dentário estava relacionado à reabilitação da saúde e da função da dentição. Hoje em dia, dada a sua importância social e psicológica, a estética do sorriso tornou-se uma das prioridades nos objetivos do tratamento dentário.
Um sorriso gengival é a terminologia usada para descrever a exibição excessiva de gengiva durante o sorriso. Em alguns casos, o sorriso gengival torna-se desagradável levando os pacientes a buscar o aconselhamento profissional para se beneficiarem de uma aparência mais estética. A quantidade de exposição dos dentes durante o sorriso é afetada pela mobilidade e comprimento do lábio superior, padrão esquelético e tamanho e posicionamento dos dentes.
Uma boa gestão do sorriso gengival deve ser baseada em um exame minucioso necessário para estabelecer o diagnóstico correto e orientar o clínico, em especial o ortodontista, para o tratamento adequado.
O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever os diferentes aspectos da exposição gengival excessiva e as suas etiologias, a fim de apresentar a solução adequada para satisfazer o paciente com sucesso.
A questão de pesquisa deste estudo "Quais são as diferentes etiologias do sorriso gengival e como os ortodontistas podem melhorar a aparência desse sorriso?" é desenvolvido usando o modelo PICO: População: pacientes com exposição gengival excessiva ao sorrir, Intervenção: tratamento ortodôntico, tratamento ortodôntico-cirúrgico e tratamento combinando outras disciplinas, como periodontologia ou tratamentos restauradores é estéticos. Comparação: Estudos com ou sem grupos de controle, Outcome: Os resultados dos tratamentos realizados.
A busca de artigos que respondam à questão será realizada utilizando literatura relevante publicada em inglês, português e francês entre os anos de 1962 e 2022 utilizando os seguintes motores de busca: PubMed, Google Acadêmico, Cochrane e livros relevantes sobre o assunto.
Traditionally, the purpose of dental treatment was only related to rehabilitating health and functional components of the dentition. Nowadays, given its contemporary social and psychological importance, the smile esthetics has become one of the most common objectives of dental treatment. A gummy smile is a terminology used to describe an excessive gingival display during smile. In some cases, a gummy smile become unpleasant motivating patients to seek professional dental advice in order to benefit from a more aesthetic appearance. The range of tooth display while smiling is affected by the mobility and length of the upper lip, skeletal pattern, and the size and positioning of the teeth. The adequate management of the gummy smile should be based on a thorough examination required to establish the right diagnosis in order to guide the clinician, in particular the orthodontist, towards the appropriate treatment. The aim of this thesis is to discuss the various aspects of excessive gingival display and its etiology in order to present the current adequate solution to successfully satisfy the patient. The research question of this study “What are the various aetiologies of gummy smile and how can orthodontists enhance the appearance of this smile?” is elaborated according to the PICO model: Population: patients with excessive gingival display during smile, Intervention: Orthodontic treatment, surgical orthodontic treatment and treatment combining other disciplines such as periodontics or aesthetic dentistry. Comparison: Studies with or without control groups, Outcome: The undertaken treatment results. The search for the articles answering the question will be performed using the relevant related published literaturein English, Portuguese and French languages between the years 1962 to 2022 using the following search engines: PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane, and relevant books on the subject.
