Abstract(s)
e vista negativamente.
adequadas a estes alunos.
Sexuality is intrinsic to human being, being one of the domains where key features of biological, psychological and sociocultural order meet and whose influence determines attitudes and behaviours. Simply by the fact that we exist, we are all sexed; there are no human beings who lack this feature. But for many centuries, sexuality was a taboo and negatively regarded. Hence the main objective of this study was to see if the teachers of the Agrupamento de Escolas de Oliveira de Frades were prepared to address the issue of sexuality and to understand if SEN (Special Educational Needs) students were prepared to experience it. Therefore, after an initial review of literature related to sexuality and to the disability problems of the two students being studied (Trisomy 21 and Profound Deafness), teachers were given questionnaires and interviews were made to the two SEN students and their mothers, as well as to two SEN professionals. The results showed that teachers do not feel comfortable when addressing the issue and that the youngsters on whom the case study was conducted had poor knowledge about their sexuality since they are not being provided with sufficient and adjusted sex education. We came to the conclusion that for disabled people to learn to deal with their sexuality in an appropriate and responsible manner, it is necessary to create and to implement sex education programmes in schools, adjusted to their characteristics, needs and life conditions. In consequence, we hereby present a training project aimed at teachers - "Formar para melhorar - os professores perante a sexualidade” (Training to improve – teachers facing sexuality) - to be implemented in Agrupamento de Escolas de Oliveira de Frades over the next school year so that they may feel better prepared to give appropriate response to SEN students in the future.
