Abstract(s)
Body posture has an influence on children's well-being and quality of life. During school age, their musculoskeletal system is developing, so they are susceptible to acquiring bad postures and injuries. For this reason, investment in postural education is recommended and is identified in the national school health plan 2015 as a priority area for intervention. This is an area where the nurse specialist in rehabilitation nursing plays a relevant role, as it promotes knowledge to children from an early age, empowering them to make decisions and thus prevent the onset of pain and musculoskeletal injuries. The objectives defined for this study were to analyse the knowledge of a sample of school-age children about body posture, through the body posture knowledge image scale - comPostura, and to verify how knowledge is influenced by the socio-demographic variables. Thus, we intend to propose guidelines for an effective practice of rehabilitation nursing, in order to improve postural education at school health level. For this purpose, a quantitative, cross-sectional and correlational study was developed by analysing the knowledge of 248 children, aged between 6 and 11 years old, attending the first cycle of basic education, from different schools in a municipality in the north of Portugal. The results suggest the need to implement measures to improve knowledge of body posture and potentiate behavioural change. It was found that participants are more capable of responding to the identification of correct postures than to incorrect ones, and a statistically significant difference was found between posture identification and year of schooling. With the results obtained, it was possible to conclude that health promotion should start early and be appropriate to the target population. Thus, the investment in postural education of school-age children should be encouraged, and the nurse specialist in rehabilitation nursing has a leading role in health promotion in schools.
