Abstract(s)
This research was carried out as part of the master’s degree course in Police Sciences, specializing in Criminology and Criminal Investigation, at the Higher Institute of Police Sciences and Internal Security, about secondary imprisonment, and its influence on the resocialization of prisoners, under the scientific supervision of Professor António Pedro Dores and Professor Carlos Correia. We combined two lines of research that we consider important for criminology and the social sciences - deviant behaviour / states of mind and the effects of imprisonment on prisoners' families. The literature and academic research on prisoners in Portugal is based on the condition of imprisonment itself or on prisoners themselves, without taking into account the effects that serving a sentence has on families. Few studies investigate the consequences of imprisonment on the family. This work aims to highlight the state's authority to control minorities, as opposed to the state of mind of respect, with a special focus on visitors/family members of prisoners in three prisons (Coimbra, Tires and Lisbon). The study will include a sample of 150 participants, made up of men and women from different areas in the centre-south of Portugal. The diversification by gender and geographical region aimed to guarantee the representativeness of the research results. The aim of this research is to analyse and understand the effects of secondary imprisonment, the existence of changes to routines, stigmatisation, shame, social isolation, financial difficulties and emotional problems, as well as impacts on mental health and general wellbeing, due to the imprisonment of a loved one, which fall within the concept that Megan Comfort called secondary imprisonment (Comfort 2003). Specific objectives: to analyse the different forms of secondary imprisonment experienced by visitors to prisoners, to explore the impacts of secondary imprisonment on visitors' lives, to identify the factors that contribute to secondary imprisonment, to investigate coping strategies and resistance to secondary imprisonment, and to propose solutions to minimise the impacts of secondary imprisonment. To achieve this, two research techniques will be used: a questionnaire survey and a case study. The questionnaire survey will be applied to a sample of prison visitors in order to collect data on experiences, perceptions and states of mind. The case studies, which took place during this research, will provide a deeper understanding of the effects of secondary prisonisation in specific contexts. The methodology used in this research is mixed, using a questionnaire survey and case studies. Research into secondary imprisonment is a constantly developing field of study, with new research and discoveries being carried out on an ongoing basis. Since there is still little research on the subject in Portugal, this research contributes to the production of relevant knowledge about it.
