Muitas vezes me questiono acerca dos motivos que levam um idoso ou um seu
significativo a procurar apoio junto de uma instituição.
Estando todos os dias no terreno, apercebo-me que, só em último recurso, sobretudo
quando devido a um problema de saúde inesperado e consequente aumento
exponencial do grau de dependência, as instituições em geral e aquela em que
trabalho, em particular, são contactadas, normalmente em situações de desespero por
parte destas pessoas significativas, quase sempre familiares diretos. Segundo eles, ou
porque por motivos profissionais, aliados à ausência de apoios ao cuidador informal,
ou por falta de “know-how” em matéria de cuidados informais, não têm quaisquer
possibilidades de cuidar dos idosos seus familiares.
Após a sua institucionalização, procurei conhecer as diferentes perceções dos idosos
quanto à mudança de vida resultante dessa institucionalização em Estruturas
Residenciais para Pessoas Idosas (ERPI’s), entenda-se Lares de Idosos, sendo esta
abordada em duas dimensões: a construção de familiaridades e a gestão da
identidade.
I often wonder about the reasons why an elderly person or a family relative seeks support from an institution. Being on the field every day, I realize that only as a last resort, especially when due to an unexpected health problem and consequent exponential increase in the degree of dependence, the institutions in general and the one in which I particularly work in are contacted, usually in situations of despair on behalf of these family relatives, often direct family members. According to them, either because of professional reasons, combined with the lack of support to the informal caretaker, or the lack of know-how in the area of informal care, they have no possibility of caring for their elderly relatives. After its institutionalization, I tried to understand the different perceptions of the elderly on the change of life resulting from this institutionalization in Residential Structures for the Elderly (ERPI's), this is Nursing Homes which is approached in two dimensions: the construction of familiarity and identity management.
