Abstract(s)
A hipodontia possui etiologias diversas, tanto ambientais quanto genéticas.
This narrative review was conducted to highlight the most common causes of hypodontia, excluding third molars, the influence on maxillofacial development, as well as the multidisciplinary treatments associated with various stages of dentition. Hypodontia has diverse etiologies, both environmental and genetic. Typically, it is the upper lateral incisors and the lower and upper second premolars that are absent. Early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach tailored to the patient's age are necessary to treat and preserve the function and aesthetics of patients with hypodontia. For this purpose, the research platforms Core, Cochrane, PubMed, and Google Scholar were used, from which the 83 most relevant articles were selected. The studies demonstrated that there is a bilateral relationship between the absence of teeth and maxillofacial development, resulting in morphological and functional alterations. To achieve an optimal and satisfactory treatment outcome, it is crucial to establish effective communication among the specialists of a multidisciplinary team, as the treatment may require the intervention of orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, general dentistry, oral rehabilitation, implantology, and surgery, depending on the age at which the treatment is initiated, the patients' expectations, and their acquaintances.
