Abstract(s)
Desenvolvemos o estudo no paradigma quantitativo
The population is getting old and this issue is requiring a lot of attention because the world’s population is continuously growing. This growth of the old population demands some actions from governments, health professionals and families, as well as some other methods that can improve the old people’ s lives. So, this project intends to get some conclusions and give some tips on the topic. Physical activity, social interaction, stress control, a healthy diet and preventive behaviours seem to be essential for a healthy lifestyle for the population on the survey. In order to give answer to several questions associated to the topic, I have defined the following objectives: describe the relationship between the elders’ social demographic characteristics and what interferes with their lifestyles; analyse the relationship between the elders’ health conditions and their lifestyles as well, and compare all this with the Portuguese old population. To find the answer to the referred subjects, I have chosen to apply a survey, having as main focus the elders’ lifestyles. The results of this study highlighted that our sample is mostly composted by female with an average age of 73,79 years and with married status. Low level of education, especially in the elders over 80 years old, where the majority of this group completed only the 1st cycle or didn’t even go to school. About 245 elders couldn’t read and 485 couldn’t write. Alcohol and tobacco consumption and the habit of do not eating 4 to 5 meals a day or avoiding fatty foods, appears with the most important risky habits in this population. We also found that half of the sample exercises in their free time. As a result, I have come to the conclusion that physical activity, eating habits and social interaction seem to positively influence, in this report, the elders’ quality of life. Only drinking alcohol and smoking have a negative impact, but not many people have these habits, as they know they are harmful for their health.
