Abstract(s)
The aim of the present study was to evaluate calcifications of the carotid arteries visualized in orthopantomographies, as well as the association of calcifications with age, sex, arterial hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, with the taking of statins by patients, and with their smoking habits. A cross-sectional and descriptive prevalence study was carried out with a sample consisting of 6749 orthopantomographies, 3883 of which were female, and 2866 males, with averages between 30 and 96 years old. The orthopantomographs were analyzed during April and May 2019, always by the same observer. After the data collection, they were analyzed statistically in the spss program in order to evaluate the correlation between the following variables: "Calcifications of the Carotid Arteries", "Age", "Sex", "Hypertension", "Diabetes Mellitus type 2 "," Statins "and" Smokers ". After data treatment, it was possible to describe a prevalence of carotid artery calcifications seen in orthopantomographies of 17.7%. Regarding the hypothesis of the study, there was a statistically significant association (p <0.001) between the calcifications and the age and sex of the individuals in our sample. It is not possible to state the same in relation to the variables "Arterial Hypertension", "Diabetes Mellitus type 2", "Statins" and "Smokers", since they were considered independent of carotid calcifications (p> 0.001). Thus, it is possible to conclude their presentation in our sample, and that it has a statistically significant association with a patient's advanced age and gender. It was not identified with arterial hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, the taking of statins by the patients, and the smoking habits of the patients.
