Abstract(s)
Sedentary behavior among adolescents represents a public health concern that requires intervention. External factors such as family support, parental health literacy and the sometimes excessive use of screens on a daily basis negatively impact the adoption of regular physical activity. A sedentary lifestyle contributes to the development of physical and mental health illnesses, which is an increasingly prevalent problem among adolescents, with an effective impact on their quality of life. The EESCSP plays a key role with different community groups, and its presence in school context represents the promotion of health literacy in the youngest sections of society, with active contributions to training and changing behaviors. The objective of the project was to increase the literacy of young people in the 8th year of schooling, on how physical activity promotes mental well-being, in order to enable them to adopt healthy choices and prevent sedentary habits. Using the Health Planning methodology, a community intervention project was developed in a school context, in which health promotion was used to achieve the objective. Anchored by Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model, it was possible to outline the appropriate action strategy for the target population. Young people demonstrated a lack of knowledge regarding the importance of physical activity in their overall development and influence on mental well-being. Health promotion in a school context made it possible to increase young people’s level of knowledge on the subject, enabling them to make healthy choices in the future that lead to changes in behaviour and lifestyles.
