Abstract(s)
Sustainability is a theme that is increasingly studied and explored in order to raise awareness of people in reducing their impacts on their surroundings. Since Music Festivals are a type of event that offers a wide range of entertainment, they are capable of becoming a good communication channel for sustainable awareness. However, it is necessary to create good strategies and actions throughout the planning of the event. The following dissertation addresses the importance of sustainability in events, especially in festivals in Portugal, taking as a case study the most sustainable festival in the country, Boom, held in Idanha-a-Nova, Castelo Branco. Initially, the concept, typology, characteristics and phases of an event and a deeper understanding of what a music festival is will be addressed. The term sustainability and its pillars relating sustainability to events will also be addressed. The Boom festival is seen as a differentiating festival, being often associated with risky behavior and consumption of psychotropic substances, however it generates beneficial positive effects in the context where it fits. It is the most sustainable festival in the country, most internationally recognized for its actions at this level and generates an important financial impact for the region. It presents a brief presentation of how Boom was born and its evolution over the years will be presented, the projects associated with the festival and its environmental, social and economic impacts not only for the region where it is located but also inserted for its participants. Two measurement instruments were used – questionnaire and interview - by influential stakeholders in Boom's success, which it was possible to observe methods to teach festival participants to be sustainable not only at the event venue but also in their daily lives and understanding the perspective of who participated in the festival.
