Abstract(s)
bons exemplos a nível europeu.
Schools are currently facing considerable challenges, as the paradigm of today's society is very different from the view for which most education systems were developed. Contrary to a recent past, where students were educated and skilled for a future job, which they could possibly maintain throughout life, today, our students no longer finish their education with these guarantees and come to a very competitive world, where many skills are expected for which their school have not prepared them. The ability to adapt to a changing world becomes essential for young people. It’s starting from this principle that many schools, in Portugal and on a global scale, seek to modify, adapt and improve the teaching that is provided to their students. It is in this context that innovation and the ability to innovate, essentially at the leadership level, are of great importance. Many schools are betting on pedagogical innovation, because it is one that represents an added value for their students. However, innovation at the level of their structures and organization is not yet a priority for many schools. Thus, school principals seeking to innovate in their practices were selected in order to enrich this study with their empirical knowledge in the management of innovative schools. Another of the principles that guided this study from its beginning was the search for good examples at European level. Thus, seven principals from six different countries, from northern to southern Europe, were selected for interview, all of whom were recognized as innovative or linked to institutions marked by the search for a better service for their school community. In this study were used mixed research methods, culminating with content analysis and statistical data analysis. The results of this study on Innovative Schools indicate the importance of creating an innovative school culture, marked by collaborative work, openness of school to families, to the environment and a shared leadership that ensures the sustainability of the innovative culture, where human relations are valued. The size of the school can also have an influence on the ability to create this school culture.
