Abstract(s)
Behaviourism emerged in the late nineteenth century through a process that involved strengthening behaviour through reward, however, it is difficult to specify the beginning of Behavioural Safety. In the 1970’s several studies were developed in the field of Behavioural Safety, some of which still serve as reference today. Behavioural Safety has been reducing the number of workplace accidents in several companies, hence 96% of work accidents are triggered by unsafe behaviour (Choudhry, 2014). A Behavioural Safety Program, however, is not in itself sufficient to reduce accidents, and should be properly implemented in order to avoid unnecessary stresses and loss of trust from the workers. There are several benefits that can result from implementing a Behavioural Safety Program, however, these outcomes are dependent on the active involvement of people and their response in the course of implementing the process, and it is extremely important to recognize these problems before the implementation. In this dissertation, has been analysed the effectiveness of a Behavioural Safety Program implemented in the oil industry, which had the participation of approximately 500 people. The decision to implement the program was taken with the objective of reversing the incident trend observed in the first few months. The analysis of the safety cards was carried out by approximately 5 people on a daily basis, and with the progress of the implementation of the program it has been verified positive influence in the performance, of Occupational Safety in a high risk working environment with a high turnover. It has been considered fundamental to reflect on this reality, hence it may lead to changes in the culture of companies with a similar reality as is the case of the construction sector.
