Abstract(s)
Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects women, children, and the elderly worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened this situation as victims have been forced to remain confined at home, increasing the risk of abuse. The United Nations has recommended increasing investments in social organisations to address domestic violence during the pandemic. Raising awareness within society about this problem is also essential so that each individual feels responsible for reporting and reducing violence, regardless of its form. Dentists play a crucial role in identifying and reporting cases of interpersonal violence. They can detect signs of abuse as injuries often occur on the head, face, and neck. Forensic dentistry is important in identifying and analysing marks of violence, contributing to the resolution of these crimes. However, there is a need for more investment in the training of dentists in this field and ensuring that legislation supports their intervention in cases of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a concerning and urgent issue that requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach. The role of dentists as observers and reporters can significantly contribute to early identification and combating of this form of violence. Investments in training, institutional support, and appropriate legislation are essential to strengthen the involvement of these professionals in the fight against interpersonal violence and the protection of victims' safety and well-being. The DGS provides guidance for this type of assistance, maintaining updated and easily understandable guidelines in its online archives. This enables dentists to stay informed and collaborate with other healthcare professionals, providing necessary support to victims.
