This report, written as part of a Master in Child Health and Paediatric Nursing at the Nursing School of Porto, aims to present a critical and reflective analysis of the training and professional pathway developed within the scope of the ‘Professional Internship with Report’ curricular unit, the main objetive is obtaining the title of specialist and master in this area. The purposes are to describe the activities carried out during the internships and highlight the consolidation of the common competences of a specialist nurse, as well as specific competences inherent to an advanced practice in Child Health and Paediatric Nursing. The internships carried out in the hospital and primary health care contexts contributed significantly to the development of professional and personal skills, enabling more quality and safety at providing nursing care. In this context, this essay also includes the development of an individual project centred on the theme ‘Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in the First Year of Life: promotion of the developmental parental role’. The selection of this topic emerged from the epidemiological importance and the significant impact it represents in the context of child health and paediatric care, due to the lack of parent´s awareness and knowledge. In addition, this issue is relevant to specialised nursing practice, particularly concerning the implementation of educational, preventive and safetypromoting strategies regarding children's sleep. In order to consolidate clinical experience with the development of the professional skills required of a specialist nurse, care concept and its documentation was operationalised using the E4nursing platform, making it possible to systematise clinical reasoning and decision-making based on scientific evidence. The critical reflection underlines the central role of Paediatric and Child Health Nurse in promoting health literacy, mitigating risk factors and building safe environments during infant sleep, as a fundamental mainstay to reduce the incidence of this phenomenon.
