Abstract(s)
It is now usually accepted that Caixa de Crédito Agrícola Mútuo (CCAM) is the only Portuguese financial institution with a cooperative basis. With more than hundred years, this is currently considered as na institution that attempts to dynamize the local economies and to promote a close bond with the communities it serves. This study aims to understand the future development of this sort of institution in Portugal. Accordingly, this project will begin by considering how this type of organizations adapted itself to regulatory adjustments, always bearing in mind its identity as part of the mutualistic banking and its inherent economic policies. Hence, this project obeyed a specific methodology that first contemplated a questionnaire sent to all SICAM’s Administrative Boards and Commercial Coordinators. Henceforward, this questionnaire was sent to seventy-six agencies, envisioning a maximum of seven hundred and sixty-nine responses. Subsequently, this investigation attempted to establish correlations that might help to envisage the existence of links between answers concerning the dimension of the agencies and its geography. The relevance of such study is highlighted by the necessity of better understanding the importance given to measures of social utility, to the role of the associates and to the typology of the mutualista banking and the effects of the regulatory measures and of the proposal of RJCAM’s preliminary revision. By doing so, this study aspires at providing a new and broader overview of such phenomenon
