Henrique Quirino da Fonseca nasceu no Funchal em 20 de março de 1863
e faleceu em Lisb oa em 7 de dezembro de 1939, com 76 anos de idade. Ingressou
na Marinha de Guerra Portuguesa em 5 de novembro de 1888 tendo-se reformado,
ap ós ati ngir o limite da idade, em 1935.
No dia 19 de dezembro de 2018, foi oferecido ao Arquivo Central de Marinha,
p ela família do biografado, um esp ólio designado “Arquivo Particular Comandante
Quirino da Fonseca”, constituído pela mais diversa documentação através da qual
me foi possível esta modesta reconstituição da vida de tal distinto oficial da Armada.
Dentre os inúmeros feitos em vida, que irão ser abordados ao longo da
presente dissertação, destacam-se a sua participação como “personagem” principal
nas operações de guerra do Rovuma entre 20 e 28 de maio de 1916 enquanto oficial
imediato do cruzador Adamastor e comandante das forças expedicionárias, a que
ficou atribuída a missão de executar essas mesmas operações.
A campanha do Rovuma, em plena Primeira Guerra Mundial, foi marcada
por diversas adversidades e polémicas que advieram não só devido a constrangimentos externos, como ao desconhecimento das peculiaridades que a foz do rio Rovuma
apresentava, bem como internos no que toca a desentendimentos e polémicas entre
os intervenientes desta batalha das quais o comandante Quirino da Fonseca não
passou ao lado.
Henrique Quirino da Fonseca was b orn in Funchal on the 20th of march 1863 and died in Lisb on on the 7th of decemb er 1939 with 76 years old. He joined the Portugu es e Navy in the 5th of novemb er 1888, havin g retired after reaching the age limit in 1935. On 19 decemb er 2018, the family of Quirino da Fonseca offered a collection to Arquivo Central de Marinha wich was named “Arquivo Particular Comandante Quirino da Fonseca”, containing a miscellaneous of documentation that made possible the reconstitution of the life of such distinguished Portuguese Navy officer. From all in life deeds that will be addressed in this dissertation, stands out his participation as “main” character on the Rovuma operations between 20 and 28th of may 1916 while second-in-command of the cruiser Adamastor, and commander of the expedicionary forces wich were assigned that mission. Rovuma campaign, during the first world war, was marked by several adversities and controversial that came not only due to external constraints, like the unfamiliarity with the mouth of Rovuma river, as also due to internal constraints such as disagreements and controversial between those intervening on these operations, of wich the commander Quirino da Fonseca was part
