Abstract(s)
Objective: Within the scope of this master's thesis, the aim is to identify/characterize the effects and changes in the oral cavity and adjacent tissues associated with the use of a set of psychoactive substances. From the list of substances to be included in this work, it was decided to select those with the highest prevalence of use: MDMA, heroin, cocaine, hashish, and marijuana. Additionally, it is intended to establish sociodemographic correlations, analyzing the influence of social class, family environment, and households on the consumption patterns of these substances. Materials and methods: In this thesis project, a cross-sectional descriptive study will be conducted to characterize the population that consumes toxic substances. Data on sociodemographic characteristics and consumption habits will be collected through an individual questionnaire, coded for anonymity. The results will be associated with self-reported signs and symptoms and the clinical observation of oral and dental alterations. The collected data will be processed using computer software, establishing qualitative and quantitative variables, followed by statistical analysis. The individual questionnaire will include questions from the OHIP-14, OHVS, CRAFFT+N 2.1 V, and ASSIST questionnaires. Results: Among the 130 participants, 21,59% of nusers received treatment for gum disease, compared to 4,79% of non- users (p-value 0.0147). Regarding bone loss, 13.64% of users were informed by dentists about bone loss around the teeth, compared to 4.76% of non-users (p-value 0.0147). Conclusions: The consumption of psychoactive substances is associated with a higher incidence of oral problems, including gum disease and bone loss around the teeth. Oral health is influenced by substance use, dietary habits, and socioeconomic factors.
