O estágio decorreu no
His report was produced as part of the Professional Nature Internship, integrated into the curriculum of the Master’s Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing in Perioperative Nursing at the Porto Nursing School, during the academic year 2023/2024. The purpose of this document is to describe, analyze, and critically reflect on activities carried out during the clinical internship and their impact on personal and professional development. Specifically, it aims to assess the development and acquisition of specialized nursing skills, both in the common areas of the Specialist Nurse and in those specialized in Perioperative Nursing, including clinical practice, ethics and legality, care provision and management, as well as research. The internship took place in the Central Operating Room and Ambulatory Surgery Unit of a hospital in the northern region, providing an opportunity to deepen relevant clinical skills and share experiences in a continuous learning environment. During this period, efforts were made to maximize clinical experiences to promote diversified professional learning. During the professional internship, an individual project was developed, focused on the prevention of complications resulting from surgical positioning in bariatric surgery. This project involved identifying client needs and implementing strategies to optimize positioning and reduce the risk of complications. Adjustments were made to the position and angle of the limbs and the density of support material, adapting each position to individual anatomical characteristics. Specific interventions were also performed to reduce the risk of complications during surgical positioning, including the additional use of materials and devices to support and protect bony prominences. During the internship, the ELPO-PT scale was used to assess the risk associated with each surgical positioning. The use of this decision support tool allowed for the identification of clients at higher risk of complications in this surgery and the planning of appropriate interventions to reduce this risk. Additionally, experience was gained in selecting appropriate surgical materials and equipment for each specific case. This project contributed to a safer and more effective approach to surgical positioning in bariatric surgery, aiming to prevent complications and promote better outcomes for clients in perioperative situations.
