Abstract(s)
The increase in the average life expectancy of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) has led to the emergence of new individual, family and social challenges. Key aspects surrounding this issue include the specificities of the early aging process in these people, as well as their informal caregivers' (IC) lack of knowledge about this process and the high level of strain and burnout experienced by them, who in most cases are also of advanced age. In this sense, it is essential to create strategies and interventions that minimize the effects associated with the act of caring, namely the physical and emotional burnout to which these caregivers of adults with ID are subjected. In this context, and considering the student's professional experience with ICs of people with ID, this project, carried out as part of the Master's Degree in Social Gerontology at the Instituto Superior de Serviço Social do Porto (ISSSP), had as its main objective the development of a psychoeducational intervention program for ICs, focusing on the aging process in people with ID. This proposal was based above all on the information gathered and analyzed in the literature review on this subject, as well as the assessment carried out on the needs of ICs and their potential interest in participating in this program. From the latter analysis, it was possible to verify that these ICs consider that they have limited information about the aging process in people with ID, while still expressing interest in participating in this program. Procedures for evaluating the effects of this program were also presented, considering its previously defined objectives.
