Abstract(s)
This dissertation studies the relationship between labour conditions and excessive crying known as PURPLE. PURPLE is characterized by intense, prolonged, and inconsolable crying, often confused with infant colic. The literature describes that factors related to childbirth, such as some clinical interventions and the mother's emotional conditions, can influence this crying pattern. The study used a quantitative approach with an exploratory, descriptive and correlational aproach, with a sample of 51 mothers who participated in two data collection moments. In the first moment, information about labor conditions, such as type of delivery or use of some medication during labor, was gathered through a interview conducted in the maternity ward. The second moment involved a telephone interview between the 6th and 8th week postpartum to describe the baby's crying and the strategies used by the mother to cope with it. The data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics, focusing on the relation between labor variables and PURPLE. The results suggest that understanding the dynamics of childbirth and their repercussions on newborn behaviour can enhance the support offered to families. This research is important for the Maternal and Obstetric Health Specialist Nurse and reinforces their role in promoting maternal and neonatal well-being during the postpartum period.
