Abstract(s)
A fronteira do sistema considera, todas as matérias-primas agrícolas, subprodutos, aditivos e embalagem, o consumo energético e o processamento, segundo uma perspetiva, do berço à porta.
Native pigs can be supplemented with compound feeds (CFs) formulated to ensure efficiency in their zootechnical performance. However, the production of CFs contributes to the environmental footprint associated with the swine sector. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the environmental performance of a new CF, formulated with agricultural raw materials and by-products from local agro-industries, as an alternative to an existing CF in the market, applying a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool. The LCA will consist of requesting inventory data on the production of new and existing ACs on the market and evaluating their environmental impact. The defined functional unit was a production of 1 ton, guaranteeing identical nutritional content among the CFs for comparison. The system frontier considers all agricultural raw materials, by-products, additives and packaging, energy consumption and processing, according to a perspective, from cradle to door. As an environmental impact assessment method, the ReCiPe 2016 midpoint is used, considering global warming, acidification, eutrophication and resource depletion as a category. The results showed that the new CF has a greater environmental impact than the standard CF for seven of the eight impact categories studied, essentially due to the agricultural management of raw materials.
