Desde que foi introduzida, a técnica dos alinhadores ortodônticos transparentes e o seu apelo estético, têm atraído cada vez mais a atenção dos pacientes, principalmente de idade adulta, que procuram uma alternativa aos aparelhos convencionais.
Esta revisão reúne conceitos sobre a biologia, bioquímica e mecânica do movimento dentário, visando a descrição e explicação do movimento realizado com o uso dos alinhadores e os mais recentes avanços desta tecnologia inovadora.
Com o plano de tratamento adequado, este tipo de aparelho ortodôntico é capaz de realizar a maioria dos movimentos com precisão. Não obstante, é referido muitas vezes o uso de acessórios ou até mesmo a combinação com terapêutica ortodôntica fixa convencional para concretizar alguns dos movimentos mais complexos.
As discrepâncias de opiniões e os diferentes resultados apresentados para cada caso relativamente à precisão e previsibilidade dos movimentos, revelam a necessidade de continuar a estudar a eficácia dos alinhadores assim como a pesquisar os fatores e variáveis que influenciam o comportamento mecânico dos mesmos.
Since introduced, clear aligners tecnique and its aestetic appeal, has brought the patient’s atention, specially the adults, who look for an alternative to convencional fixed appliances. This review gathers concepts about biology, biochemistry and mechanics of tooth movement, aiming the description and explanation of the movement made with the uso of clear aligners and the most recent improvements of this inovative tecnology. With the proper treatment plan, this tipe of orthodontic appliances is capable of realizing most movements with accuracy. However, it is mentioned several times that the use of accessories or even the combination with fixed appliances to achieve some of the most complex movements. The discrepancies of opinions and different results obtained in each case concerning the accuracy and predictability of the movements, reveal the necessity to keep studiyng the efficacy of clear aligners as well as researching factors and variables that influence the mechanical behavior of the aligners.
