Abstract(s)
This report is part of the Master's programme in Medical-Surgical Nursing, in the area of Nursing for People in Perioperative Situations, at the Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto. It aims to provide a critical and sustained account of the process of acquiring and developing specialised skills in this area of nursing during the professional internship carried out in a hospital in the northern region, in the central operating room and operating room of the orthopaedics speciality. It is therefore intended to be a written record, based on scientific evidence-based practice, describing and reflecting on the activities carried out during the internship and how they enabled the specialised competences to be achieved, providing growth as a person and as a professional in the specific area of perioperative nursing. The perioperative period is characterised by being a time of great impact on the client's life, involving changes in their daily life, generating great vulnerability, from changes in family dynamics, fear, anxiety and insecurity, especially when they don't receive adequate guidance on the surgical intervention (Ferreira et al., 2022). On the basis of what I learnt during my master's degree, the experiences resulting from this immersion in the context of practice and personal reflection, I decided to outline my development of specialised skills in one of the areas of autonomous intervention for perioperative nurses: the Pre-Operative Nursing Visit to the adult client undergoing elective surgery. This is a privileged moment to collect data with the client/family/significant person, enabling the identification of nursing diagnoses, the definition of objectives and the prescription of interventions appropriate to the specific needs of each client, promoting the humanisation and quality of perioperative nursing care, as well as client satisfaction. The development of specialised skills provided by this internship proved to be a transformative factor that influenced personal and professional confidence. This paved the way for continuing this development, based on the four pillars of nursing: practice, teaching, research and management, with the aim of promoting improvements in the provision of perioperative nursing care and the evolution of the profession.
