Abstract(s)
Aloe vera is a plant widely used due to its therapeutic and cosmetic properties, such as anti-inflammatory, healing, antioxidant and moisturizing properties. The growing demand for natural products in the cosmetics and food supplements industry justifies the interest in this plant. This work aimed to explore the beneficial properties of Aloe vera in cosmetics and food supplements, with a special focus on its effectiveness, safety and possible adverse effects. A narrative review of the literature was carried out using the PubMed, Science Direct, B-ON and Google Scholar databases. The research included studies published between 2007 and 2024, selected based on their relevance to the properties and applications of Aloe vera in cosmetics and food supplements. The studies analyzed confirmed that Aloe vera has a positive impact on skin hydration, elasticity and regeneration, being effective in treating acne, psoriasis and burns. Furthermore, Aloe vera has beneficial effects in increasing the bioavailability of certain compounds, such as vitamins C and E, and acts as a therapeutic complement in chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. However, some adverse effects have been identified, such as hepatotoxicity and drug interactions, especially in cases of prolonged ingestion or inappropriate use. In conclusion, Aloe vera stands out as a highly valued ingredient in cosmetics and food supplements due to its regenerative and moisturizing properties. However, its prolonged use must be monitored to avoid adverse effects. Product safety and quality must be ensured through strict regulations.
