situações concretas do cuidado perioperatório.
The increasing complexity in the perioperative field requires nurses to have specific training and highly specialized clinical performance. The commitment to "caring," inherent to the social mandate of the nursing profession, can only be fully fulfilled when one possesses the necessary skills and competencies for qualified and effective care. This report, developed as part of the professional internship, Module II, which is included in the curriculum of the Master's Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing, with a focus on assisting individuals in perioperative situations at ESEP, aims to reflect on the process of developing common and specific competencies leading to specialization in this field. To achieve this goal, a descriptive and reflective approach was adopted, based on a theoretical framework that allowed the integration of theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as the competencies acquired throughout the training process. The internship was guided by two main objectives. The first was the implementation of an individual professional development project, which enabled the integrated application of knowledge and the acquisition of the clinical skills required for a specialist nurse in Perioperative Nursing. The second objective was to incorporate this project into a broader framework of promoting and enhancing the general and specific competencies that a specialist nurse should demonstrate, ensuring differentiated and high-quality care for patients. In this regard, a clinical case experienced during the internship will be presented. Based on nursing ontology and the available scientific evidence, it was possible to make informed decisions and represent the knowledge and practice of specialized nursing in real perioperative care situations. Given the issue of infection associated with knee arthroplasty, and considering that a significant portion of these cases can be prevented, the project “Prevention of Surgical Site Infection in Patients Undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty: Contributions of Perioperative Nursing” was developed. The implementation of the activities planned in this project, such as epidemiological surveillance, research, training, and the development of nursing ontology, not only enabled the acquisition and enhancement of competencies in this specialty area but also contributed to improving the quality of perioperative care, with a focus on preventing and controlling surgical site infections.
