Abstract(s)
Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) affect the oral cavity and the tissue in the vicinity, being considered as one of the most prevalent oral pathologies. TDIs occur in people of all ages and may compromise oral function, negatively impacting occlusion, aesthetic and development. After a trauma occurs, the initial management and the qualification of the attending doctor are preponderant in the prognostic and effectiveness of the treatment. The adoption of standards that address the management of TDIs by dentists are given by the guidelines IADT (International Association Dental Traumatology) and the use of these may contribute to the increase of favourable outcomes. The aim of this study was to appraise the level of knowledge dentists working in Portugal had about dental trauma and the different treatment approaches recommended by guidelines IADT. The total sample of this study comprises of 111 complete answers by dentists enrolled in the Portuguese Order of Dental Medicine. On a first approach the transcultural adaptation of the brazilian questionnaire “Dentists knowledge of dental trauma based on the IADTguidelines” (Hartmann); afterwards the questionnaire was sent in European Portuguese to study the sociodemographic variables and the knowledge about dental trauma. The mean age of the sample is between 23 and 67 years. Most of the inquired (95.5%) are generalists; 34.2% has been working for a period of time in between 11 and 20 years and 81% has clinical experience in the treatment of dental trauma. It was observed that there was a strong correlation between the number of cases previously treated and the mean knowledge scores of the participants. The results from the study indicate that the level of knowledge is globally slightly higher than average, suggesting that most of the participants have competence in this area that may be considered adequate.
