Abstract(s)
The growing awareness and concern with environmental sustainability, as well as the legal commitments and obligations assumed by Portugal, and inherently by the Portuguese Air Force, simultaneously contribute to the pressing need to implement mitigating measures that allow the reduction and compensation of greenhouse gases emissions to the atmosphere. Considering the fulfilment of the established environmental goals, this investigation seeks to identify the potential of carbon sequestration through the assessment of carbon emissions resulting from the activity developed by the Portuguese Air Force and the capacity of offsetting these emissions by its forest. To achieve this goal, a deductive reasoning research was developed, supported by a qualitative strategy with qualitative reinforcement and a case study research design. It was possible to observe that, despite being quite relevant, the current capacity of carbon sequestration by the forest is still not enough to compensate the totality of CO2 emissions. However, there is potential to increase the carbon sequestration capacity and obtain greater economic and environmental benefits. The current production and consumption patterns are not consistent with a sustainable future. The present study seeks to make an organizational environmental diagnosis and raises awareness for future challenges.
