Abstract(s)
The establishment of secure bonds between institutionalized children and adolescents and their caregivers within the institution is an important factor for their emotional regulation and facilitates the use of adaptive coping strategies. Based on this premise, the study aimed to explore the attachment to a reference figure within the residential care institution and to understand its relationship with individual factors, emotional regulation, and the frequency and effectiveness of coping styles in dealing with stressful events. Sixty institutionalized children and adolescents, aged between 8 and 17 years, participated in the study. The participants answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale – Adolescent Version (DERS-AV), and the Schoolager’s Coping Strategies Inventory (SCSI). The results showed that the length of institutionalization, difficulties in emotional regulation, and coping styles were predictors of secure attachment to the reference attachment figure in the institution, but only in the dimensions of communication and alienation attachment. This study emphasizes the crucial role of attachment dimensions in the emotional regulation difficulties and coping strategies observed in institutionalized children and adolescents.
