Abstract(s)
The present study examined how the performance of tour guides facilitates the engagement and immersion of tourists during guided tours of Chiado and the perception of this area as a literary district. The research focused on understanding how these professionals contribute to the tourist experience and how their approach influences the appreciation of the literary and historical elements of the neighbourhood. For this purpose, a qualitative approach was adopted based on bibliographic research, including interviews conducted with tour guides and participant observation during guided tours that covered the area in question. The study indicates that tour guides who perform as "plus" guides are essential in creating an environment conducive to tourist immersion. Through mediation, they manage to transform local history into narratives that not only inform but also engage visitors emotionally. Such skills proved important, as they influence tourists' perceptions of the quality of the service and contribute to their overall satisfaction. Thus, it was confirmed that the figure of the "plus" tour guide can transform a superficial experience into a memorable one in a cultural context, facilitating tourist immersion and contributing to the appreciation of Chiado as a literary district.
