Abstract(s)
This dissertation focuses on the civic center of Condeixa, mainly in the characterization of it as it is today, as well as his evolution over the past two centuries. It is also intended to understand the concept of civic center and how it evolves in the defined period of this city history, identifying some premises, features and identity requirements of that civic center. The civic center of Condeixa exists since 2011 as it stands today, but its genesis took place in 1811 during the assault made by Napoleonic troops in the 3rd French invasion. The small yard from the XIX century located in front of Sãs’s Palace has been renamed in 1910 to Republic Square. It’s only with the works made in the same century and after the demolition of the old Palace and the removal of its debris that this place becomes a Square. Since then until today, still suffers changes in its form and content, but always keeping the same role as "living room" and "heart" of Condeixa city. The construction of the Municipio’s Square, contiguous space, with which connects through a car circuit with reduced intensity occurred in 2001 as well as the commercial buildings surrounding and other services that runs alongside. The remaining public buildings that surrounded this square are from different eras, from the seventeenth century’s Palace of Figueiredos (now the City Hall), till the year 2005 with the Court house and nowadays with the new building of the Parish House. This group of buildings, where we can add the main Church of the village, located between the City Hall and the Republic Square, suffers its last refurbishment in 2007, reinforcing the idea of the two squares together, bringing together the public space as one - the Civic Center It is essential to contextualize the theme Civic Center, in order to understand how Condeixa’s presents his physical space that is assigned to that title. Therefore, we present an approach on the evolution of the city, and more specifically their civic centers, from classical times until today, but with primary focus in the Ágora and the forum, as they are the precursors of these concepts in which they already were the center of life in the city. Le Courbusier was the urban planner of the twentieth century, chosen to illustrate how the last century in terms urban dealt with the theoretical past, more specifically on civic centers, exemplified by two civic centers designed by this author.
