Abstract(s)
Se bem que a sociedade actual tenha uma noção da dimensão da Terra, essa mesma noção variou ao longo dos tempos e foi distinta em cada época. Enquanto o processo cognitivo dependeu da evolução tecnológica, a perspectiva de espaço-tempo tem sido uma construção social ao longo da história da humanidade.
Neste contexto a análise da história militar entrecruza-se com estudos de geografia, no que se refere à concepção da escala humana perante as dimensões de espaço que a rodeia e também da velocidade de deslocação dos objectos e da transmissão de informação.
A ideia de aniquilamento do espaço pelo tempo apresentada no livro O Capital de Karl Max, foi posteriormente desenvolvida pelo geógrafo David Harvey no seu livro The Condition of Postmodernity and Spaces of Capital, onde as questões de compressão do espaço-tempo e as implicações na economia, cultura e sociedade foram expressas.
Partindo das ideias de David Harvey o nosso artigo tem o objectivo de abordar o contacto entre uma perspectiva militar sobre a alteração dos limites das paisagens e o progressivo desenvolvimento tecnológico, numa abordagem da evolução dimensional espaço-tempo observável no caminho para a Grande Guerra 1914-18.
Although present-day society has a sense of the size of the Earth, this same notion has varied over time and has been different in every age. While cognitive process depended on technological evolution, the space-time perspective has been a social construction throughout the history of humanity. In this context, the analysis of military history intersects with studies of geography, with regard to the conception of the human scale in relation to the dimensions of space that surrounds it, as well as the speed of displacement of objects and the transmission of information. The idea of annihilation of space by time in Karl Max's book "The Capital" was later developed by geographer David Harvey in his book "The Condition of Postmodernity and Spaces of Capital", where space- time and the implications on economy, culture and society were expressed. Based on the ideas of David Harvey, our article aims to approach the contact between military perspectives on the alteration of the limits of the landscapes and the progressive technological development, in an approach of the space-time dimensional evolution observable in the way for the Great War 1914- 18.
