Abstract(s)
In recent years, the typology of missions and the role of the navy in operations has evolved. At the same time, the diverse and demanding theaters of operations where missions have been assigned to various military organizations, in particular those of the navy, have given rise to a growing concern on the part of military organizations to adapt physical assessments to the current reality, making the its operationally relevant tests, in order to be able to assess and predict the performance of the military, thus making it possible to obtain more accurate information on their physical readiness. With the aim of ascertaining the relevance and, possibly, later creation of a test that would allow the assessment of the military's physical readiness, a study of the physical assessment tests implemented in the Portuguese Navy and other similar forces, which were assumed to be more developed, followed. as, interviews with the soldiers of the garrisons of the Portuguese ships. As a result of the study, the current physical fitness tests of the navy are not considered operationally relevant to perform generic tasks on board ships, as well as to fight and act in emergency situations. In detriment of this, it was assumed as pertinent to create the naval physical readiness test in order to complement the current physical fitness tests. The test integrates four tests, the horizontal jump test, the medicine ball tossing on your knees, the weight carrying and the agility-speed circuit. The tests as a whole aim to assess the explosive power of the lower limbs, necessary to carry people and overcome obstacles at knee height, to assess the performance of the three most recruited movements in carrying out generic onboard tasks and to assess running at speed (one of components to physical readiness) with changes of direction, necessary to act, for example, in an emergency in an obstacle space.
