- Development of a Form to Assess the Self-Care Competence of the Person with a TracheostomyPublication . Queirós, Sílvia; Santos, Célia; Brito, Alice; Pinto, IgorBackground: The development of the self-care competence in the person with a tracheostomy is described as a key driver for a healthy transition to life with a tracheostomy. An instrument for assessing the self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy contributes to nurses’ decision-making and promotes the quality of care. Objectives: To develop a tool for assessing the self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy. Methodology: A methodological study was conducted. Content validity was obtained through the judgment of experts, with a focus group methodology. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The instrument was applied to a sample of 80 participants, using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. Results: The study resulted in a form with 39 indicators, divided into 6 areas, which showed good internal consistency (alpha = 0.89) and recognised content validity. Conclusion: The final version of the form is applicable, and has the potential to be used in future studies on its validity.
- Conditioning factors for the development of the self-care competence in the person with a tracheostomyPublication . Queirós, Sílvia; Santos, Célia; Brito, Alice; Pinto, IgorBackground: The development of the self-care competence in the person with a stoma promotes a healthy transition to a life with a stoma. Studies suggest the existence of factors conditioning the development of the ostomy self-care competence. Objectives: To identify the conditioning factors for the development of the self-care competence in the person with a tracheostomy. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted in a nonprobability sample composed of 80 participants. Data were collected using the “Assessment Form of the Self-Care Competence in the Person with a Tracheostomy. Results: The conditioning factors for the development of the tracheostomy self-care competence were: being a man, having low schooling, having had an emergency surgery, having a temporary ostomy, and having a caregiver. The postoperative period proved to be a facilitating factor. Conclusion: The recognition of the existence of factors conditioning the development of the tracheostomy self-care competence allows nurses to identify conditions of vulnerability in their patients and adapt their interventions with a view to enhancing their autonomy.
- Promotion of tracheostomy self-care: a qualitative study based on the nurses’ perspectivePublication . Queirós, Sílvia Maria Moreira; Soares-Pinto, Igor; Brito, Alice; Santos, CéliaAim: To describe nurses’ perspectives on promoting tracheostomy self-care. There is little information on the nurses’ perspective as care providers with knowledge of clinical contexts. Design: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Methods: A purposeful sample of nurses was selected from eight Portuguese hospitals. Recruitment ended once data saturation was reached (n = 12). Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed through content analysis. Results: The nurses described the most important aspects to promote tracheostomy self-care, namely the objectives, the contents to be addressed, the methods and resources to be used, the appropriate moment to intervene, the necessary conditions to promote self-care, the way to ensure the standardisation of interventions among nurses, and the level of tailored planned interventions. Conclusion: From the nurses’ perspective, promoting tracheostomy self-care is critical for regaining autonomy. Therefore, it is crucial to establish an intervention plan sensitive to individual needs and preferences. These results can help elucidate the aspects considered by nurses when promoting tracheostomy self-care so that more meaningful and feasible care models can be designed. © 2023 Central European Journal of Nursing and Midwifery.
- Validation of a form to assess the self-care competence of the person with ventilation ostomyPublication . Pereira, Brizida; Queirós, Sílvia; Brito, Alice; Santos, CéliaIntroduction: Self-care competence can improve health outcomes in people with a tracheostomy. The use of an instrument to assess the self-care competence of the person with an ostomy allows for organized and complete data collection, facilitating the identification of nursing care needs. In Portugal there is no validated instrument that allows the assessment of self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy. Objetives: To assess the psychometric and clinimetric properties of the form to assess self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy. Methods: Methodological study in a non-probability sample of 195 participants. Results: The form presented high internal consistency values, being greater than 0.90 in all domains. Inter-judge reliability, the Wilcoxon test, and the two-half test showed very similar values in the evaluation performed between evaluators. Regarding its validity, a positive interdomain correlation and good relation between clinical variables were demonstrated. Conclusion: The instrument demonstrated good psychometric and clinimetric properties, however further studies are needed to assess reliability and validity.
