- Accomplishing PROMISE, PROgrammable MIxed Signal ASIC Electronics FrameworkPublication . Berrojo, Luis; Veljkovic, Filip; Ayzac, Philippe; Maggioni-Mezzomo, Cecilia; Trouche, Christophe; Kakoulin, Michael; Franciscatto, Giancarlo; Berti, Laurent; Arslanov, Dmitry; Póvoa, Ricardo; Guilherme, Jorge; Roumkou, Anna; Tukkiniemi, KariThis paper presents the activities, current results and status of the PROMISE (PROgrammable MIxed Signal Electronics) project which started at the beginning of 2020 . The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 870358. It’s tailored to bring to the space community a flexible, cost competitive mixed-signal ASIC architecture design ecosystem built on a portfolio of silicon qualified hardened IP blocks. It includes analogue IPs such as ADC, DAC, PLL, LDO, BG, LO, POR and HV MOS transistors. A digital embedded FPGA core provides a flexible programmable element and an NVM permits reconfiguration abilities without the need of using an external memory. All these elements are included on the PILOT Circuit ASIC that will be submitted to electrical validation and radiation testing as part of the qualification process of these basic elements for their future use as building blocks.

- Architectural Design for Heartbeat Detection Circuits using Verilog-A Behavioral ModelingPublication . Vieira, R.; Passos, F.; Póvoa, R.; Martins, R.; Horta, N.; Guilherme, J.; Lourenço, N.This work presents a study of two analog frontend circuit architectures for heartbeat detection. Both circuits present an amplification block as the first stage, followed by a band-pass filter. In the first, the heartbeat detection is done using an adaptive threshold based on pulse-width, whereas the heartbeat detection in the second is done using a sample and hold to find the maximum and minimum peak of each beating. Both architectures are modeled in Verilog-A and simulated using real-world ECG signals with different characteristics. This work studies possible fundamental analog circuit blocks suitable for wearable implementation. It evaluates critical performances requirements from the analysis of the behavior simulations. It was verified that the first circuit can properly detect heartbeats as long as the input-referred noise is below 21 μV, whereas the second one ensures it until 30 μV. The low cutoff frequency can be approximately 10 Hz without compromising the signal’s peaks, which means that these specifications can be relaxed substantially compared to systems intended to reconstruct the signal accurately.
- Bem-estar intergeracional no antropocenoPublication .
- Covid-19 in Portugal - Economical consequences (an approach)Publication . Silva, A. L.This work intends to show how the pandemic SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the disease Covid-19, has affected all the world in several domains, also, differently from country to country. In particular, the way it has affected the Portuguese life, mainly concerning the country’s Economy. It also shows the evolution of the transmissibility rate, the numbers of infected cases and deaths as well as the vaccination plan in Portugal, which was a case of success due the implementation of a Task Force with that focus. Knowing that different factors are contained in Economic concept, such as health, GDP, inflation, employment (most of it could be affected by Lockdown measures), tourism flow among others. An approach related to the evolution of the disease in Portugal will be presented in this article.
- Design of an Underactuated USV CatamaranPublication . Assunção, Mário; Teodoro, Pedro; Marat-Mendes, Rosa; Franco, VictorThe Sea2Future program was developed at ENIDH, since 2018, and it has involved the construction of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) with the participation of students and teachers of this educational institution. This firstUSV, with two hulls, referred to as USV-enautica1, included a control system which allows it to carry out several functions autonomously and it was used to study the composite construction, the propulsion command and control architectures, the navigation algorithms, and the control systems. The challenge of designing a lightweight hull suitable for coastal and open ocean navigation is described and the implemented solution for the microcontroller and software operation, the sensors, the navigation, and the control systems are explained. The USV has successfully demonstrated its ability to be operated remotely, which is necessary to validate the hydrodynamic parameters, and afterwards the aim of autonomous operation.
- Edge Computing and Internet of Things Based Platform to Improve the Quality of Life of the Silver Economy on Leisure Cruise ShipsPublication . Plaza-Hernández, Marta; Sittón-Candanedo, Inés; Alonso, Ricardo S.; Martínez-de Iturrate, Luis C.; Prieto, Javier; Kravari, KalliopiToday, the Internet of Things, Big Data and Machine Learning are a regular part of people's daily lives, especially for the elderly or the so-called Silver Economy. There are more and more applications in which collecting and storing information about users (and their context) to produce classifications and predictions allows the optimisation of the services offered, improving the life quality of the citizens. In this sense, leisure cruises represent environments where it is necessary to provide quality services for a reasonable price. This requires understandings the behaviour of users both locally (i.e. each cruise) and globally (i.e. all cruises). In this respect, IoT, Big Data and Machine Learning are presented as ideal technologies for prediction-making and the improvement of the quality of services. However, on ships at sea the transfer rate of the Internet connection is limited. In this sense, Edge Computing allows taking part in the application computing to the Edge of the network, closer to the IoT layer. Data can be filtered and pre-processed in the Edge before it is transmitted to the Cloud, reducing its volume and the associated costs of its computing and storage in the Cloud. Machine Learning algorithms can also be applied to recognise patterns and anomalies on the Edge itself, even if the connectivity with the Cloud is lost. In this paper, we propose the design of a platform which aims to improve the quality of life of the elderly on leisure cruises.
- Instigating Maritime Studies via Rapid Prototyping and Robotics: A Case From the Smartboat InitiativePublication . Teodoro, Pedro; Marat-Mendes, R.; Assunção, Mário; Alves, Nuno; Sanguino, Beatriz; Gaspar, Henrique M.A case on rapid prototyping is presented in this work to exemplify the use of learn, make and share activities to promote maritime studies. SMARTBOAT is an initiative from the Escola Superior Náutica Infante D. Henrique, in Portugal, where students are invited to interact with computer-aided design modelling, additive manufacturing and programming. Such initiative is paramount to instigate and promote higher education studies in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM). The initiative is presented and discussed, with its main steps and schemes. A step forward is later discussed by the ongoing collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU, Norway), which intend to combine the Portuguese case with recent advancements in robotics and digital twin, such as remote operation via internet of things protocols and web-based tools. The work ends with a discussion on the results and future works on autonomous shipping, as well as a call for the development and sharing of similar initiatives.
- Living Lab Benefits for Evidence Based Education and Open innovation the eShip case studyPublication . Batista, M.; Chkoniya, V.; Gonçalves, F. C.As society changes rapidly, there is a need to educate professionals who contribute to innovation and complex adaptations in organizations, and Living Labs are recognized as educational environments to prepare students in higher e 2021). There is a trinomial relationship between Academy, Society, and Industries, which are interestingly far more exploited than the Education and Research. Effective management of the knowledge and information transferred between open innovation ecosystem partners is crucial -life setting, co-creation, active user involvement, multi-stakeholder participation, and a multi-method approach (ENoLL, 2022). world we live in, and scholars belonging to a wide variety of academic disciplines are investigating the opportunities deriving from such a revolution. The scientific development of both concepts is an active field in the academic community, and new ideas appear, opening new paths of knowledge transfer methods with knowledge from data. And Living Labs can be used as adaptable platforms where researchers and practitioners collaborate to carry out evidence-based research and innovation on educational processes (Montero & Krawczyk, 2021). The success of Open Innovation in enhancing innovation development has resulted in public authorities incentivizing firms to adopt the paradigm through public subsidies for research and development activities (Bigliardi, Ferraro, Filippelli, & Galati, 2021). As a leading institution in the training of professionals linked to the maritime a D. Henrique (ENIDH) is involved in the eShip project, supported by the EEA Grants. Thus embodying its role as a promoter of technological and digital progress in the sector. The eShip project aims to digitize the vessel chartering process, thereby cutting management costs and fueling the digital transition. The primary objective of the eShip project is to develop a digitalization model for the entire chartering process, from the market research stage to the completion of the trip, including freight negotiation and contracting, real-time trip analysis, overage calculations. /sub-stay, issuance of shipping and billing documents, post-trip analysis, and regulatory compliance. This electronic platform will be tested in two pilot projects using an innovative approach in technological and pedagogical terms, through Living Labs, focusing on the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) market, which is located in evident rise, and Solid Bulk (Kyas, Springer, Pedersen, & Chkoniya, 2021). Using the eShip Case Study, this paper demonstrates that Experience-Based Expertise and Open Innovation must be understood as a single process, where Living Labs that involve Academies and Enterprises create unique conditions for society's progress.
