ESTUDO DE ATIVIDADES NUMA EMPRESA DE CONSULTADORIA AMBIENTAL: GESTÃO DE RESÍDUOS DE OAU E AVALIAÇÃO AMBIENTAL ESTRATÉGICA Abstract This work experience report intends to show the reader the different steps to be taken for proper waste management, in this specific case of used cooking oil (UCO). The importance of commercial establishments that produce OAU, knowing direct them to the relevant authorities. As well as the correct completion of the waste tracking guides and handling of Siliamb platform. Within the study of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), we analyzed the cases resulting in Sinergiae Environment, Lda. This work detailed the procedures to land management instruments (IGT). SEA is a planning tool to assist in choosing a sustainable economic and environmental development, a process of SEA should be directed to sustainability, focused, verifiable, participatory and iterative. With the application of these performance criteria, it becomes more effective and with more quality. Keywords: waste management, used cooking oil, strategic environmental assessment, land management tools.
- Cataracts in Labrador Retriever and Jack Russell Terrier: a two-year retrospective studyPublication . dos Santos, Rafael Guerra Campos Marques; Duarte, Sofia Alexandra Giestas Cancela; Vilhena, Hugo Corte-RealCataracts are among the most common ocular diseases and are a leading cause of vision loss in dogs and humans. Jack Russell Terriers (JRT) and Labrador Retrievers (LR) are among the canine breeds most affected by cataracts. This study aimed to analyse the clinical features and the surgical outcome of cataracts in JRT and LR in an ophthalmological reference Veterinary Hospital in the United Kingdom. Medical records from JRT and LR diagnosed with cataracts between January of 2015 and December of 2016 were retrospectively evaluated. Data related with identification, clinical history, pre-operative features and surgical outcome were analysed. Forty-four dogs (81 eyes), including 26 JRT and 18 LR were enrolled in the study. Mean ages were 10.2 ± 3.2 years in JRT and 8.5 ± 3.7 years in LR. Twenty-eight (63.6%) were females and 16 (36.4%) were males. Most dogs (84.1%) presented bilateral cataracts. The most prevalent type of cataracts was nuclear and cortical in JRT (42.9%), and subcapsular in LR (31.3%). Significant differences in cataract location within the lens were detected between the two breeds (P=0.013).Senile in JRT (n=7) and genetic in LR (n=7) were the most common aetiologies. Concomitant ocular lesions were more frequent in dogs presented with cataracts in advanced stages, and included lens position (n=18; JRT: n=15; LR: n=3) and retinal alterations (n=8; JRT: n=2; LR: n=6), and glaucoma (n=6; JRT: n=5; LR: n=1). Thirty-three animals (75.0%, 51 eyes) were submitted to phacoemulsification with intraocular lens placement. Of these, 28 eyes (54.9%; JRT: n=21; LR: n=7) were visual, 17 eyes (33.3%; JRT: n=11; LR: n=6) presented impaired vision and six eyes (11.8%; JRT: n=0; LR: n=6) were blind at last clinical record. Post-operative complications were detected in 11 eyes (21.6%), being more frequent in dogs presented with cataracts in advanced stages. The obtained results and the multifactorial nature of cataracts call for further studies to identify and characterize the variables in a broader assessment, including other breeds and influencing factors.
- Oxidative status in feline pyometraPublication . Figueiredo, Marta de Sousa; Duarte, Sofia Alexandra Giestas CancelaThe oxidative status of the organism is dependent of the balance between oxidant reactants and antioxidant defenses. Oxidative stress develops when the oxidant reactants exceed the antioxidant defenses of the organism. The oxidative stress causes alterations in cellular metabolism and cellular damage. The antioxidant response of the organism can be assessed by determination of individual parameters such as total serum thiols (Thiol) and/or by determination of the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the organism. Parameters of oxidative status have proved to be useful biomarkers in several canine and feline diseases. Pyometra is considered one of the most important uterine diseases in cats. However, information about the oxidative status in queens with pyometra is lacking. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to evaluate the oxidative status of feline pyometra through the determination of serum concentration of Thiol and TAC, and to evaluate the clinical evolution of these antioxidants in the post-ovariohysterectomy period. Serum concentrations of Thiol and TAC (determined by four different methodologies) were assessed in 17 queens with pyometra and in 13 healthy queens submitted to elective ovariohysterectomy (control group). Serum Thiol and TAC were also evaluated in six queens with pyometra at days two and 10 after surgery. Routine histopathology of the reproductive organs was performed in all animals, to confirm pyometra in the diseased queens, and to exclude uterine pathology in the control cats. At presentation, diseased queens presented significantly lower serum concentrations of Thiol and TAC than controls (P<0.001 in both cases). In the queens in which serial determinations of antioxidants were performed, serum Thiol and TAC were significantly higher at day 10 post-surgery than at presentation (P<0.05 in both cases). The results of the present study indicate that pyometra in queens is associated with presence of oxidative stress. Moreover, serum Thiol and TAC tended to evolve to physiologic values after surgery. Therefore, oxidative stress parameters could be useful in assessing the post-operative period in feline pyometra.
