- About Hazing In Higher EducationPublication . Martins, Maria José D.; Bauer, Yvo Benjamin Raposo; Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Mendes, Maria; Botelho, Susana Pinho; Silva, OsvaldoNot a year goes by that we don’t hear of another hazing scandal in a higher education institution. Many researchers took interest in this issue in order to understand its causes and consequences. They provided definitions and lead to prevent it. We found hazing in many social groups around the world, with different names, and under specific forms. This paper aims to better understand hazing and its actors, with a specific focus on hazing in higher education. We presented three definitions to offer several perspectives on hazing, and facilitate its apprehension. Our method was to analyze the relevant scientific literature with the intention of reflecting on its roots and representation among individuals. Results are an exposition of motivations from hazing's actors, recommendations about how to define it and how to prevent derivations. Our main conclusions assume hazing is usually depicted as a deviant behavior, but it would appear to be a norm. Also, its core purpose would be the progression from newcomer to a group member. A lack of structure or meaning could lead to its misuse and facilitate outrageous events. In higher education, hazing seems to be used as a tool to integrate freshmen in their new institutional world. Scandals including violence, sexual and alcohol abuse could be a symptom of something deeper from hazing's environment.

- Prediction of peptide and protein propensity for amyloid formationPublication . Família, Carlos; Dennison, Sarah R.; Quintas, Alexandre; Phoenix, David A."Understanding which peptides and proteins have the potential to undergo amyloid formation and what driving forces are responsible for amyloid-like fiber formation and stabilization remains limited. This is mainly because proteins that can undergo structural changes, which lead to amyloid formation, are quite diverse and share no obvious sequence or structural homology, despite the structural similarity found in the fibrils. To address these issues, a novel approach based on recursive feature selection and feed-forward neural networks was undertaken to identify key features highly correlated with the self-assembly problem. This approach allowed the identification of seven physicochemical and biochemical properties of the amino acids highly associated with the self-assembly of peptides and proteins into amyloid-like fibrils (normalized frequency of β-sheet, normalized frequency of β-sheet from LG, weights for β-sheet at the window position of 1, isoelectric point, atom-based hydrophobic moment, helix termination parameter at position j+1 and ΔG° values for peptides extrapolated in 0 M urea). Moreover, these features enabled the development of a new predictor (available at http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/appnn/index.html) capable of accurately and reliably predicting the amyloidogenic propensity from the polypeptide sequence alone with a prediction accuracy of 84.9 % against an external validation dataset of sequences with experimental in vitro, evidence of amyloid formation."
- Traqueoesophageal fistula patients fed through percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy/gastrojejunostomy: nutritional status and clinical outcomePublication . Santos, Carla Adriana; Pereira, Marta; Martins, Vera Santos; Fonseca, Jorge"BACKGROUND: tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) may result from cancer or mechanical ventilation. Endoscopic Gastrostomy or Gastrojejunostomy (PEG/PEG-J) is used for nutritional support. OBJECTIVE: in TEF-patients, evaluating nutritional status when PEG is performed, safety of PEG/PEG-J and clinical outcome. METHODS: from the files of PEG/PEG-J feed TEF-patients we collected: clinical data, Body Mass Index, albumin, transferrin and cholesterol when gastrostomy was performed, and clinical outcome globally and according with the TEF cause: Group 1: complication of mechanical ventilation, Group 2: cancer. RESULTS: twelve patients, 18-91 years (median: 53), 11 PEG, one PEG-J: six complications of ventilation (neurological diseases), 6 cancers. Mean period from TEF diagnosis until gastrostomy: 2 months in Group 1, 10 months in Group 2. In the day of the gastrostomy, patients presented with malnutrition parameters, most strikingly in the cancer group. Group 1: died a single patient, 3 closed the TEF, resuming oral intake, 2 are still PEG-feed. All cancer patients died (7 months after gastrostomy). One needed a jejunal extension to create a PEG-J. No more complications. CONCLUSION: PEG/PEG-J was safe in TEF-patients, but cancer patients underwent gastrostomy too late. In TEF-patients, PEG/PEG-J should be considered in a regular basis, earlier in the disease evolution, before established malnutrition."
- Intestinal Amyloidosis in common variable immunodeficiency and Rheumatoid ArthritisPublication . Meira, T.; Sousa, R.; Cordeiro, A.; Ilgenfritz, R.; Borralho, P.We present a case of reactive amyloidosis that developed secondary to common variable immunodeficiency and rheumatoid arthritis. A 66-year-old woman, with prior history of common variable immunodeficiency and rheumatoid arthritis, was referred to our clinic for chronic diarrhea investigation. The patient was submitted to colonoscopy with ileoscopy, which did not show relevant endoscopic alterations. However, undertaken biopsies revealed amyloid deposition. Since amyloidosis with GI involvement is a rare cause of chronic diarrhea, this pathology should be considered in etiologic investigation, especially when associated with chronic inflammatory diseases.
