- Numerical modelling of operational risks for the banking industryPublication . Barreira, Raquel; Pryer, Tristan; Tang, Q.
- Combining models in discrete discriminant analysis in the multiclass casePublication . Marques, Anabela; Ferreira, Ana Sousa; Cardoso, MargaridaThe idea of combining models in Discrete Discriminant Analysis (DDA) is present in a growing number of papers which aim to obtain more robust and more stable models than any of the competing ones. This seems to be a promising approach since it is known that different DDA models perform differently on different subjects (Brito et al.(2006)). In particular, this will be a more relevant issue if the groups are not well separated, which often occurs in practice. In the present work a new methodological approach is suggested which is based on DDA models' combination. The multiclass problem is decomposed into several dichotomous problems that are nested in a hierarchical binary tree (Sousa Ferreira (2000), Brito et al. (2006)) and at each level of the binary tree a new combining model is proposed to derive the decision rule. This combining model is based on two well known models in the literature - the First-order Independence Model (FOIM) and the Dependence Trees Model (DTM) (Celeux and Nakache (1994)). The MATLAB software is used for the algorithms' implementation and the proposed approach is illustrated in a DDA application.
- Research methodologies for EER in Europe: taxonomical classification of EER papersPublication . Wiiliams, Bill; Malmi, Lauri; deGraaf, Erik; Adawi, Tom; Curmi, Ronald; Duffy, Gavin; Kauz, Christian; Kinnunen, PäiviThis paper presents a taxonomy for classifying EER papers. The taxonomy includes the following dimensions for categorizing research: theoretical background of the paper, general research strategy, type of collected data, data analysis methods, and the general type of paper (research paper, case report, position paper). The taxonomy also allows recording how explicitly the paper presents these aspects. We have used the taxonomy to analyse a set of papers from central European forums of presenting EER: two years of volumes of European Journal of Engineering Education, and the EER track of the SEFI conference.
- A practical approach to model banking risks using Loss Distribution Approach (LDA) in Basel II frameworkPublication . Barreira, Raquel; Pryer, Tristan; Tang, QiIn Basel II Capital Accord, the Advanced Measurement Approaches (AMA) is stated as one of the pillar stone methods for calculating corporate risk reserves. One of the common yet cumbersome methods is the one known as loss distribution approach (cf. [3]). In this article, we present an easy to implement scheme through electronic means and discuss some of the mathematical problems we encountered in the process together with proposed solution methods and further sought on the issues.
- Phase change in engineering knowledge production: from an academic to an entrepreneurial contexPublication . Williams, Bill; Figueiredo, JoséThis study uses the characterization of contrasting modes of knowledge production to follow the engineering design and research activity of a group of engineers who migrated from an academic environment to a successful startup firm. Semi-structured interviews were used to construct a narrative approach characterizing their activities in the two settings. We relate their practice to Mode 1 and Mode 2 knowledge production phases and note the importance of a phase change in the transition between the two modes.
- Facilitating the adoption and dissemination of active and cooperative learning methodologies in engineering education using a learner activity index approachPublication . Williams, Bill; Carvalho, Isabel S.The overall aims of the project are centred on the adoption and dissemination in engineering education at institutional and inter-institutional level in Portugal of good practice with regard to Active and Cooperative Learning (ACL). We aim to achieve this over a three-year project lifetime through a two-phase strategy: i) Initial implementation of ACL techniques in formal teaching contexts at departmental level in two engineering colleges through the use of self and peer observation using a semi-quantitative tool to measure a Learner Activity Index; ii) Subsequent dissemination of the approach to other departments and colleges using online Community of Practice (CoP) cultivation strategies and Web 2.0 tools.
- Discrete discriminant analysis: The performance of combining modelsPublication . Marques, Anabela; Ferreira, Ana Sousa; Cardoso, MargaridaThe idea of combinig models in Discrete Discriminant Analysis (DDA) is present in a growing number of papers which aim to obtain more robust and more stable models than any of the competing ones. This seems to be a promising approach since it is known that different DDA models perform differently on different subjects [1]. This is a particularly relevant issue when the groups are not well separeted, which often occurs in practice. recently, a new methodological approach was proposed based on a linear combination of the First-order Independence Model (FOIM) and the Dependence trees Model (DTM) ([3] and [2]). In the present work we further explore the referred approach. Since FOIM assumes that the P discrete predictive variables are independent in each group and DTM takes the predictors relationships into account, we think that the proposed approach could be sucessfully applied to many real situations. In order to evaluate its performance, we consider both real and simulated data. Furthermore we present comparisons with alternative models performance. According to the training sample size the leave-one-out approach, v-fold cross validation or assessing the error rate in a test sample are considered. The MATLAB software is used for the algorithms' implementation.
