- Escala ALONE para a população idosa portuguesa: Tradução, adaptação cultural, validade de conteúdo e validade facialPublication . Guerra, Sara; Sousa, Liliana; ROSAS DA SILVA, SOFIA DE LURDES; Martins, Maria; Tavares, JoãoBackground: Loneliness among older adults is a significant public health problem that requires early detection for effective intervention. The ALONE scale is a brief (five items) and reliable tool that holds promise for clinical use. Objective: Translation, cultural adaptation, content validity, and face validity of the ALONE scale for Portuguese community-dwelling older adults (≥ 65 years). Methodology: This methodological study comprised three stages: (a) translation and cultural adapta-tion; (b) content validity assessment with 15 experts (content validity index, CVI); and (c) face validity assessment through semi-structured interviews with eight older adults. Results: Linguistic equivalence was achieved with the original ALONE scale. The items had strong content validity (CVI ≥ 0.8, average CVI of 0.97, universal agreement of 0.71, excellent kappa). Face validity assessment showed that the ALONE scale captures the feelings of loneliness, is useful, and is easy to understand and complete. Conclusion: The translated and culturally adapted ALONE scale shows content and face validity for assessing loneliness among Portuguese older adults in community settings.
- Psychometric validation of the Portuguese ALONE scale and analysis of factors associated with severe loneliness in a sample of community-dwelling older adultsPublication . Tavares, João; ROSAS DA SILVA, SOFIA DE LURDES; Ribeiro, Ana; Matheus, Anna; Sá-Couto, Pedro; Sousa, Liliana; Guerra, SaraObjectives: Severe loneliness poses a significant risk to older adults’ health and quality of life. Thisstudy assessed the psychometric properties (reliability and validity) of the Portuguese version of theALONE scale in community-dwelling older adults and explored the scale’s associations with sociode-mographic, social isolation, depression, life satisfaction, and daily functioning.Method: A descriptive, correlational study was conducted with 285 Portuguese older adults. Thequestionnaire included sociodemographic and health data, the ALONE scale, Social Isolation Scale(SIS), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), UCLA Loneliness Scale(UCLA-16), and Lawton and Brody IADL Scale. Analyses included confirmatory factor analysis, internalconsistency, group comparisons, correlations, and logistic regression. Results: The confirmatory factor analysis supported a unidimensional model with satisfactory fitindices and internal consistency (α = 0.743). Severe loneliness correlated positively with social isolationand depression and negatively with life satisfaction and daily functioning. Participants experiencingsevere loneliness were likely older, female, living alone, socially isolated, depressed, and dependentin daily activities. Significant predictors included social isolation (OR = 0.806) and depression (OR =1.131).Conclusion: The ALONE scale demonstrated validity and reliability for assessing loneliness in olderadults, making it a suitable, efficient tool for clinical practice.
- Validation of the Portuguese version of the social isolation scale with a sample of community-dwelling older adultsPublication . Tavares, João; Faria, Ana; Gonçalves, Delphine; Mendes, Diana; ROSAS DA SILVA, SOFIA DE LURDES; Sousa, LilianaObjectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties (reliability and validity) of the Social Isolation Scale (SIS) in a sample of Portuguese community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A transversal descriptive study was carried out with a convenience sample of 250 community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years). The survey comprised a sociodemographic questionnaire, SIS, Geriatric Depression Scale-4 (GDS-4), 6-item Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6), a loneliness self-assessment question, and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Construct validity (confirmatory factor analysis) and convergent validity were analyzed, and ISI internal reliability (composite reliability), external reliability (test-retest, intraclass correlation coefficient) and inter-rater reliability (Cohen's kappa coefficient) were evaluated. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis showed a two-factor model with an excellent index of fit. The SIS showed significant correlations with LSNS-6 (r s = 0.47), SWLS (r s = 0.26), the loneliness self-assessment question (r s = 0.35), and GDS-4 (r s = -0.16). SIS composite reliability was good (0.708). The inter-class correlation coefficient varied from 0.84 to 0.98. The Cohen's kappa coefficient ranged from 0.936 to 1. Conclusions: SIS has been shown to be a valid and reliable instrument for assessing social isolation among Portuguese community-dwelling older adults. Healthcare professionals, particularly nurses working in community settings, can use SIS to assess social isolation in older adults to design, implement, and evaluate interventions.
