- Comparison of mineralogical, mechanical and hygroscopic characteristic of earthen, gypsum and cement-based plastersPublication . Santos, Tânia; Gomes, Maria Idália; Silva, António Santos; Ferraz, Eduardo; Faria, PaulinaIt is important to ensure indoor comfort by passive methods, avoiding mechanical equipment that has energy costs. To assess plasters common efficiency but also its contribution as moisture buffers, five different plastering mortars, including unstabilized and stabilized earth-based plasters, gypsum and cement-based pre-mixed plasters, were analyzed and their chemical, mechanical and hygroscopic characteristics compared. The materials and mortars were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and simultaneous thermal analysis. Linear shrinkage, dry bulk density, dynamic modulus of elasticity, flexural and compressive strengths, dry abrasion resistance, surface cohesion, surface hardness and sorption and desorption of mortars and plasters were also evaluated. The mechanical strength of earthen mortars is lower than gypsum and cement-based mortars. However, earth plasters show the highest hygroscopicity, acting as moisture passive buffers, improving thermal comfort and contributing to occupantś health.
- Factors influencing healthy food choices of university studentsPublication . Sousa, Bruno; Alves Pacheco, Catarina; Pereira, Carolina; Batalha, Mariana; Santos, Tânia; Vitorino de Carvalho, RitaIntroduction : Healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts, among others, should be available to anyone, especially young people, for example at the school level (1).In the National Program for the Promotion of Healthy Eating, one of the action plans for 2018-2019 was the “Modification of food supply in certain public spaces (including higher education institutions)” and for 2019- 2020: “Contribute technically to the implementation of a simplifying nutrition labeling system”(4). Thus, schools and universities should be able to encourage young people to choose higher quality food products by promoting certain menu changes (2).Today it is known that young consumers are well informed about the products they eat (3) and also have become more aware of the foods they chose both at home and away from home (4). Increasingly interested in adhering to a healthy diet, young people are progressively opting for more complete food products, both in terms of their nutritional value, as well as their origin, the form of production, including locally grown and organically grown produce, the composition, and the healthiness of the food product (5,6). Conscientious consumers value personal health and are sensitive to the effects of food products (5). Young people also place progressively greater attention on the quality of a product. In addition to the quality parameter of a food product, other factors influence young people's choices, namely economic (7), social, and personal taste (3) factors. However, due to the adaptation of a new environment, study stress, lack of proper time management and busy class schedules, these university students can suffer a lack of concern about their own health and consequently also present unhealthy food choices (8,9). The presence of healthy restaurants in the university campus could be a possible way to prevent these unhealthy patterns. Taking this into consideration, the main aim of the presente study was to describe the factors that may influence the choice for a healthy restaurant in the university campus, as well as the trends in healthy food consumption among university students from the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (ULHT) in Lisbon, Portugal.
- Landing wise program : feasibility study protocol for Parkinson’s diseasePublication . Fernandes, Júlio Belo; Domingos, Josefa; Família, Carlos; Santos, Cátia; Santana, Diana; Gregório, Francisco; Costa, Inês; Afonso, Joana; Matos, Lúcia; Marques, Solange; Santos, Tânia; Fernandes, Sónia; Santos, Isabel; Sousa, Natacha; Ramos, Catarina; Godinho, CatarinaRegardless of the benefits of fall prevention programs, people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) will still fall. Therefore, it is crucial to explore novel therapeutic approaches that are well-accepted and effective for addressing fall risk and the fear of falls among this population. The present study aims to assess the feasibility of the Landing Wise program as a therapeutic intervention for reducing the fear of falling in people with PD. A mixed-methods study will be conducted using convenience sampling to recruit 20 people with PD with a moderate concern of falling from a Parkinson’s Patients Association. In addition to usual care, participants will attend 2 days per week, 90 min group sessions for 8 weeks. The intervention combines group cognitive behavioral intervention with the training of safe landing strategies. Feasibility will be assessed by six key domains (recruitment strategy and rates, enrollment, retention, acceptability, reasons for decline/withdrawal, and adverse events). Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to characterize the sample, followed by inferential statistics to evaluate differences in the Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International Scale, Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale, Timed Up Go, 6-Minutes Walking Distance, and fall frequency and severity scores between baseline and final assessment. Qualitative data will be analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis process. There is a growing interest in developing new effective therapeutic approaches for people with PD. If proven program feasibility, this study precedes a randomized controlled trial to establish the effectiveness of the Landing Wise program.
