- To what extent has the epidemiology of cancer changed in Portugal?Publication . Regili, Noha; Trancoso, PedroOral cancer is a major public health issue, due to its growing incidence worldwide. It mainly comprises cancers of the lip and oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer, which are among the most frequent forms of head and neck cancer. Most of these pathologies are diagnosed at an advanced stage, which considerably reduces patients' chances of survival. Late diagnosis is often due to a lack of early symptoms and awareness. The main risk factors are well established: tobacco and alcohol consumption, risky sexual behavior, exposure to HPV (particularly subtype 16), poor oral hygiene, unbalanced diet, exposure to certain carcinogenic substances such as areca nuts or mate, and socio-economic determinants playing a crucial role in access to screening and care. The aim of this work is to study the epidemiological evolution of oral cancer in Portugal over a twelve-year period, between 2010 and 2022. The analysis is based on data from official databases such as GLOBOCAN and ECIS. Indicators assessed include incidence (number of new cases), prevalence (total number of existing cases) and mortality (number of deaths due to cancer). To enrich this assessment, a comparison was made with France, as well as with data from other regions of the world, such as Europe as a whole, the United States and Asia. This comparative approach enables us to better understand national specificities and identify factors influencing geographical variations in the burden of oral cancer. Comparisons show a more serious situation in France than in Portugal, an improvement in the United States, and high rates in Asia, underlining the importance of preventive approaches tailored to each region.
