- How to legitimize Design Thinking?Publication . Passadouro, Mariana Rodrigues; Patrício, Rui; Casaca, JoaquimAs Design Thinking (DT) reaches maturity, new studies about prevailing adoption barriers are needed. Previous studies suggested that the need for legitimacy often drives the motivation to adopt DT. However, there is a lack of in-depth research and appropriate methods to assist companies on how to create DT legitimacy. Therefore, the study draws on employee perceptions and organizational workplace theories to shed light on this relationship and propose a set of testable propositions. The theoretical background provides the opportunity to identify concrete directions to legitimize DT in companies, i.e.,: i) lowering the power distance between innovation team members and manager relationships across the innovation journey; ii) empowering innovation leaders in a culture of openness and feedback about new ideas; iii) having innovation managers trained in creativity and innovation management, and iv) designing a physical space and artifacts intended explicitly for creativity and innovation practices. By considering the implications on the individual (employee) and the social structure (organization), these propositions add construct clarity to the concept of legitimacy in DT, create more robust approaches for DT adoption in companies and advance innovation management theories. These propositions were the basis for the construction of 4 hypotheses that were tested on the field through an empirical study with the company MEO.
