- Implementation and evaluation of case-based teaching and learning methodologies supported by video resources : a cross-curricular and integrated approach in undergraduate dental educationPublication . Morgado, Mariana Mendes; Proença, Luís; Mendes, José JoãoThis thesis investigates the implementation and evaluation of case-based teaching learning methods using video resources in the context of undergraduate dental education. The study's objective is twofold: firstly, to enhance clinical skills and communication skills, and secondly, to promote learner engagement through the integration of videobased learning (VBL) into health education curricula. A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of extant literature reveals that VBL significantly enhances knowledge acquisition, particularly in the field of dentistry, while demonstrating moderate efficacy in medicine and limited evidence in nursing. A further scoping review also examines the ethical and logistical implications of incorporating video recordings of patient-clinician interactions (PCIs) into educational practice, highlighting the need for robust ethical frameworks and guidelines to ensure informed consent and confidentiality. The findings suggest that video-based methods promote critical thinking and practical application of knowledge, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical understanding and real-world clinical practice. Furthermore, the study emphasises the significance of interactive components within learning management systems (LMS) in optimising personalised learning experiences. Notwithstanding the demonstrated benefits, challenges such as technological accessibility and the need for faculty training in multimedia content creation are identified as barriers to effective implementation. This research makes a significant contribution to the development of pedagogical strategies in health education, offering valuable insights for educators, policymakers and practitioners. It is recommended that future studies quantify the long-term educational benefits of VBL, explore its emotional and psychological impact on learners, and assess its direct influence on patient outcomes, thereby ensuring the continuous evolution of effective, engaging, and patient-centred health education. The present thesis is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education), through the implementation of innovative and inclusive learning strategies; SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), through the enhancement of dental training and patient outcomes; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through the promotion of a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach.
